One of my friends just inquired about rates for me to do her wedding. Im relatively new in the photography business and have taken pictures at a wedding that the bride asked me to … but never been the actual wedding photographer. I have no idea what to charge for a wedding. I also would love the opportunity so don’t want to turn them away by overcharging but I also know how much work a wedding will be on the day and editing afterwards. Any suggestions or resources that you know of would be great!!
    Thanks so much, keep inspiring!

    Hi Krystal!

I think it’s pretty amazing that you’ve been asked to photograph a wedding, even if it’s one of your friends. It means that she likes your photography – and most of all, that she trusts you. If you are someone who wants to be a wedding photographer one day, that’s a huge reason for a happy dance ;)

I’ve actually done a blog post on working for free/discounted rates for family & friends. You can find that here:
    http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com/blog/2012/08/07/how-to-combat-the-evil-family-friend-discounts/

I’ve also done a blog post on pricing, which you can find in full here:

A great thing that I picked up from your comment was that she has inquired about your RATES! Which means she doesn’t expect you to do it for free!

Know that it’s okay that it will be your first wedding as the actual wedding photographer. We all start somewhere. Just make sure she KNOWS your limited experience. Make sure she knows exactly what to expect from you. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. And make sure you get out there and second shoot as much as possible before her wedding day. This will give you invaluable experience and confidence that will really help you perform to the best of your ability on her special day!

I hope this has helped you gain some clarity :) Definitely let me know how it goes!

    Big hugs!
    xoxo
