Is your boringness affecting your business?

Good morning, lover!

Do you ever feel uninteresting? Like you’re playing by the rules? Have you settled for the status quo?

And if so, do you feel like it’s affecting the success of your business?

I get email after email from business owners all over the world who feel “stuck”, and they don’t know how to break free from the paralyzing feeling.

Today I want to ask you one question that’s going to open your eyes and help take your business to the next level, and I’m also going to equip you with an unexpected mantra that’s going to give you much-needed guidance in every business task you do this week.

Are you ready for a heavy dose of inspiration? Watch this:

Now, lover, you know how much I love comments. Last week we reached 47 comments – let’s get more this week!

To help you out when deciding what to say in your comment, I’ve left you a few questions below. Answer them now:

  • Is your business drastically different from your competitors?
  • If not, tell us one thing you know needs improvement to be more unique!

Big hugs
xoxo
Alex

Love the video …. and adore the “good is not good enough” quote from your sister. So True. My way to SHINE? I write smart, sassy, Southern fiction – My heroines don’t need a man to swoop in and solve all of their problems! xx, Lauren

  • Anna

Sooo inspiring! Thank you, Alex :)

Love this post! So needed to hear this! My way to shine? I am so silly with my clients and put everything I have into what I do…. I even make them do silly dances like Gangnam style at their shoots just to get them to loosen up and to get them used to me. :)

Thank you again for your wake up call Alex! Sometimes its so hard to embrace being different because of the reason you mention – I see that something is working for somebody else so why not me? This is such a weak thought process and you’re right! ALWAYS embrace fresh, different ideas!!

  • Ashley Hall

I love the inspiration! Just need to figure out what makes me stand out and how to show that to potential clients. ahhhh!

  • Loni

Yes mee too, love your garb today:)

    Love your outfit today, Alex!

The one thing I can do is to inject my humor into my website’s copy a little more. It’s kind of boring right now! I’ve been looking into some great copywriters who won’t edit out my voice, so I’m saving up!

  • Briana Morrison

Gosh, I’ve felt so boring lately this video was just spot on! As a wedding and boudoir photographer I really value a fine art approach. One thing that really makes me, and my work, unique is that I love to shoot with Polaroid cameras and instant film. If I focus more attention on that unique skill and put together a Polaroid specific offering, then maybe it will help me stand out from the crowd.

    Hey Lauren,

Thanks for your amazing comment – I love the “Good enough is not good enough” quote. My sister is amazing, every time she tells that to me I’m always awakened and enlightened, reinvigorated to put my BEST into each and every thing I put out there.

And I LOVE what makes your books stand out from the crowd, great description! What have you found are the best ways to illustrate these differences to the people who are purchasing your books? I’m fascinated!

    Big hugs,
    xoxo

Alex!! Hi dear, as always great Chatty Tuesday!

So this weeks video totally hit home. I’ve been struggling so much with trying to brand myself so I stand out against the many other photographers in my area. I’m trying to find a way to put everything together. I think I have an idea of what I’m wanting to do. I’m also going to a big photography conference this weekend so I know that will help as well.

Thanks as always for being so awesome and sharing your wisdom!

P.S I love that song…and it’s now stuck in my head!! haha

  • http://www.alexbeadon.com/ Alex

    Carmen,

I LOVE that you make them do silly dances – your photos must be such an experience, I love it!

Thank you so much for commenting! I love hearing what you have to say!

    Big hugs

@daynakaleidoscopebrain:disqus – ALWAYS embrace fresh, different ideas! YES! And the best part is that we are all different already, just the way we are. The key is to highlight your amazing, quirky differences in the way you do business, do your artwork etc… because that’s what will make you truly shine bright like a diamond :) Thank you for your comment, Dayna! <3

  • http://www.alexbeadon.com/ Alex

Ashley, what makes you different is the way your brain works, the quirky things about your personality, your unique viewpoint that allows you to tackle business and art in totally different ways than anyone else ever could. Avoid the status quo and find NEW ways to do things in your business, that’s what I try to do in order to shine bright like a diamond :) GOOD LUCK and thank you for your comment!

    Big hugs
    xoxo

Thank you, Marinda! Ooooh that is SO exciting! Who have you been looking into? My favorite is themiddlefingerproject.org for sure! :)

  • http://www.alexbeadon.com/ Alex

@google-345528dc1a1c304fbc275e52b555cd15:disqus I LOVE your idea of infusing your love for Polaroid cameras and instant film into your offerings. This is spot on! What kind of offering would it be? Would it be polaroid only? Or mixed with digital? I’m interested!

  • http://www.alexbeadon.com/ Alex

    @tinatinacarrphotography:disqus ,

I am SO HAPPY that this hit home for you, but also relieved to hear that you are making moves and pushing yourself in the right direction. That is so hard for so many of us, so I’m happy and excited to see you doing that! Enjoy your photography conference, tell us all about it when you get back!

BIG HUGS & SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND!
    xoxo

  • Molly Elizabeth

Ohh Alex, you’ve done it again!

I am just SO BAFFLED by the fact that my entire life was spent not quite fitting in with the crowd, yet as a photographer, I feel like I am stuck in a world of the same. It’s literally killing me inside to know that I cannot seem to find my special something that makes me stand out from other photogs. I’ve asked my friends & family to help describe me in 3 words, all were different & unimaginative answers. :/ BUT I shall not give up until I find what I’m looking for!

I almost feel like I am on the very brink of discovery, but I haven’t quite tipped over yet! I can just feel it coming!

Thank you again so much for your inspirational words that keep me going through even the toughest times! You are a true gift to the business world. :)

  • http://www.alexbeadon.com/ Alex

    Molly!

Thank you so much for your comment, it encouraged me and inspired me because it’s obvious that you are on the right path! That feeling of being on the very brink of discovery? Hold onto that, and follow your intuition because it won’t lead you in the wrong direction!

    BIG HUGS!
    xoxo <3

  • Dayna @kaleidoscopebrain

No problem Alex! Keep up the amazing videos! (also, to answer your question, I have to say, I kind of loved the old format with the longer videos, since I honestly felt like every second was a gem, but these are great too! Thanks again!!)

  • beopenyoga

Excellent post Alex, thank you! This is great to keep in mind as I work on revamping my website. Much appreciate. Kisses!

  • Mikell Nielsen

Uggghhhhh, your video comes at a time when I am struggling as a photographer! I don’t know who I am and clearly I’m not alone! I’m all over the place with my style. I’m in the middle of a creativity block. I am almost paralyzed when I head out with a client because I don’t know what to do with them. Any suggestions for finding creativity again and finding out what your style is? I need someone to look inside my head and soul, organize the ice and pull out something definitive and amazing. Anyone out there willing to do that? lol Seriously, any suggestions for finding one’s style?

Again, thanks as always Alex for all the work, passion and love you share with us! xoxo

  • http://www.beautifulonlinepresence.com/ Marinda Jansen van Rensburg

OMG Ashley is awesome, she just makes me laugh! I love her emails like I do Chatty Tuesdays! I discovered her about a month ago and just got lost in the blog :)

Right now it’s a toss up between Ashley, and Laura from talkingshrimp.com who also works with Miss Forleo on MarieTV. I love them both so much, but they have different offerings. So it will come down to what I need when I have written as much as I can on my own.

  • http://www.takeonlymemories.com/ Vanessa, Take only Memories

Great inspirational video! Love the message. I feel like I sometimes struggle with being myself (in life as in business) and am trying to find my own voice without trying to fit in. I feel like school drilled conformity deep into my bones. NO FUN!

  • http://www.facebook.com/pamelacurtin214 Pamela Curtin

Hi Alex, I agree with you totally. Rather than making it a “goal” to “be different,” I simply follow what feels real and honest for me, and standing out comes naturally. It’s actually really easy to “be different!”

I feel my personality is one hallmark of my photography business. I am a quiet person with a calm demeanor, so I do not stand out in the flashy way others might. At first I struggled with trying to catch others’ attention, but I then realized I attracted clients who share a similar personality to my own. They consistently mention how this relationship made their photography experience unique, and I reply that I love working with people I relate to as well! It’s a win-win! It’s so great you’re spreading this message, it is so valuable to hear

  • Kev Rayner

    Love it !!!! Be different,don’t be a sheep !!!

    I am a shining bright DIAMOND !!!

I hate to admit it, but at least for me, you’re right. My product and my business are boring. they are cookie-cutter.

This is going to spark a massive re-branding for me. Thank you for posting. :)

  • Dayna @kaleidoscopebrain

    Hey Alex,
I have nominated you for Inspiring Blogger Award. (I know you probably have planned and scheduled posts, and don’t really expect you continue the nomination, but I just wanted to let you know how influential reading your posts has been for me. :) ) Please accept this http://kaleidoscopebrain.wordpress.com/2013/04/08/the-inspiring-blogger-award/ nomination. You have really inspired me with your posts, and I wanted to say thanks. All the Best!

    Cheers,
    Dayna @kaleidoscopebrain

  • http://livingthecreativelife.blogspot.com/ Jennifer M.

Yes this is a great perspective. I too am very quiet and probably not as flashy as the average person. Staying true to my own vibe is probably a better way to go than simply trying to be “different”.

  • Meredith Sanders

Thanks for this, Alex! I’ve been thinking about doing some changes in my business, and this just sent me over the fence!

  • http://www.sparkyourself.org/ Sophie | Spark

I completely agree – I’m also on the quieter side and found it a bit difficult when first starting to write to compete with all the ‘awesomers’ and ‘amazing’ and ‘sooooo excites!’ out there, but have since realised that’s not my authentic voice and I need to be softer and gentler. It’s still a work in progress, but this video gives me encouragement to keep pursuing my differentness and use it to my advantage!
