Your mind follows your body.

Today on Love Elle Bee my sister, Lizzie, mentions the importance of getting out. She says: “Your mind follows your body.”

This is something that is so obvious and so evident in my own life, but I hardly act on it. Being self-employed has made it easy for so many of us to work from home, and the truth is – most times you don’t really have to leave your house to go to work. 90% of the time, my computer and internet access is pretty much all I need.

And so, my tendencies come and go in patterns. Sometimes I wake up every morning and work from a coffee shop. I’ll diligently do this for weeks and weeks until one morning I wake up and work from home. In which case I’ll continue to work from home day in and day out. I’m weird like that.

And the funny thing is that I KNOW I work better in coffee shops. I’m so much more productive, so much more “in the zone” and I really attack my to-do list in a way that is totally different from when I’m at home.

I love the way Lizzie said, “Your mind follows your body”. For some reason sitting in a coffee shop makes me feel like I’m at “work” and it therefore makes me work harder. And whenever I’m at home at my desk, I just feel like I’m at home. And I get easily distracted by food, laundry, the weather etc etc etc. And as my mother always says, “there’s a time and a place for everything”. So I’ve decided to take full control of this by forcing myself into coffee shops from now on.

Why? Because I have the “go big or go home” mantra running over and over in my head. And if I’m going to run a business, I might as well make it as successful as I possibly can. And to do that, I need to work as hard as I possibly can. And if that means going to a coffee shop every day to really focus on my day’s tasks? Then that’s what I’ll do.

Where do you feel most productive? Do you work in your most productive environment? How could you make your environment more inspiring for productivity? Think about that!

Anyways, I’m about to head out to meet my sister for lunch! Another plus to working in a London coffee shop – I’m so close to my sister’s office that we can meet up for lunch! Yay! :)

Big hugs and love
xoxo

I think our Mama’s would hit it off…universal mother catch phrase? Great post, now following your sis also, fabulous ladies!! xox We all got our hang ups, for some reason when I’m on a laptop I can tackle my pending emails like a champ, super fast super efficient…when I’m on my desktop…not so much. Vise versa, all editing needs to be on my clean tidy desk. Sometimes I just need a change of scenary, kitchen, bf’s place, bff’s place etc.

I LOVE your sisters blog, she’s such a great writer! I definitely know where you’re coming from, I have to go to the library to get any uni work done. It doesn’t seem to make any difference that I’m working on the same stuff, on the same laptop – I’m just not as productive at home!

That is SO true. I’m a full-time writer, and rarely do I get work done at home. Which is sad, because I did put a lot of money into my home office! I get too distracted by all the other things I could be doing, but when I’m at the coffee shop, or the beach park, I’m just working and I get so many more words on the page!
