Focusing can be difficult.

Hello lovely readers,

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who wished me a Happy Birthday yesterday, and I am so pleased that the image was well received. It was a self portrait, so lots of nice emails from wonderful photographers found their way to my inbox asking me how I get my focus so perfectly. The truth is that most of the time I don’t. I just experiment moving back and forth until I get it absolutely perfect. Or I put something in my place, focus on it, and then take its place.

Here’s proof that in most of my photos I get the focus all wrong.

The truth of the matter is we are all human, and can only learn as we go. In fact, I’m thinking of buying a music stand to put in my place so I can get the focus spot on. Don’t get discouraged by the difficulty of self portraits, it is the difficulty that will help you grow, learn and improve as a photographer and artist. Rock it out and don’t give up.

During that tutorial video you posted a while back about self portraits, I thought it was pretty nifty that you could just… focus so narrowly like that and have everything else this sweet, un-distracting blur.

One gets pretty used to the horrible flat-focus of the disposable cameras at the grocery store and sometimes I don’t think my old Powershot A620 is much of a step up; I can only get dreamy blur when doing extreme macro shots!

Though auto focusing has its charm, too. LOL.

Still amazing. Absolutely amazing! Your birthday picture was definitely one of my favorites of you!

You have the same birthday as my hubby! Happy belated to you.

Also, it’s nice to see you have the times where focusing can be a pain in the…….

Sometimes it’s a matter of repeating until its right. Now, doing it for a self portrait, takes a whole other level of patience!!
