One way to discover your signature photography style.

Sometimes it’s nice to look at your work over the past year as a collection as opposed to individual shoots. For some reason it adds more interest and tells more of a story of who you are as a photographer. Not only that, but it makes your signature style almost obvious. Which is ironic, because for the most part you tend to be totally unaware of it.

My challenge to you today: Make a small collage of your work. What does it tell you about your style? Brainstorm. Do you express this style well to your clients?

Here is a collection of some of my favourite work over the past year, what do you think it says about my style?

Hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday!

PS Big hugs to all of you who have been purchasing actions lately! You rock!

First thing I see is the bright colors (even in the black and whites it looks bright). Then I see the amazing frames you find. You frame your images so beautifully with anything you can find and then it’s accentuated by the vignettes.

    So bright and happy!

Such a great idea to do a collage of favourite works. That is a definite way to see a style coming through! I see your works as a colourful whimsy, fashiony and stylish.

Wow. I loved looking at all these. Your pictures really express emotion to me. If you look at all these, they all show a lot of emotion and tell a story. :)

I absolutely love your style. It is something I strive for in my own photography, I am still learning how to make use of photo editing software. I have yet to try Photoshop, I prefer to use Paint Shop Pro but after seeing your actions it makes me want to make the leap over. Thank you for the inspiration.

I would have to say your style is dreamy, like anything is possible, if that makes sense. I love your photos, thanks for sharing your talent. Keep on snapping :)

I would say you love color! Your pictures are very romantic, but not too sweet.

I would say that you love to get creative, which is something that I want to work on! You see the beauty in everything and your style is very whimsical! You inspire me! And I love your actions!

I’d say your style is very feminine. Also, for the most part, the subject is centered in the photo.

Love the photo of the girl playing in the field.

    Hi Jessica!

Thanks so much for your comment, and it’s interesting to hear the word you used to describe my work, “Artistic and Mysterious”. So thank you! Being a newbie in photography is one of the most EXCITING times! There is so much to discover, experiment with, and learn – enjoy this time in our photography journey :)

    Big hugs

    Hi Melanie!

Very good point – most of these are centered! Something I never noticed before, but now that you mention it you are very right. I feel like this is breaking the rules of photography, but I think when the subject is centred it gives it some sort of power, which I like. Anyways, this is interesting for me to note and wonder why it is I do what I do, so thank you for pointing it out to me! :)

    Big hugs

You definitely adhere to the rule of thirds! I feel that’s a good thing. You also strive to evoke a sense of the internal musings of your subjects; these images tell stories. The girl who finds herself in a strangely ethereal garden smells a rose in wonder, a sixties vixen lounges coolly yet cautiously by a city doorway in noir style… each tells of longing, passion, hesitation, jubilation. You favor limited depth of field which lends to the whimsical charm of each portrait, making your compositions almost dreamlike. Your color corrections are lush & vibrant but not overbearing; again, almost ethereal. The black & whites are mulch-faceted, not flat & lifeless. Your style is vivacious, mysterious, & soulful. And always, always with a spark of optimism!
