Let’s talk about light. – Chatty Tuesdays!

Darling artists,

Below is a video I made for you guys. I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately concerning light, and how to deal with a very sunny day. So I thought it would be a good time to cover how to use sun to your advantage. Please keep in mind that while I prefer a soft, even type of light – it’s totally up to YOU. You are the artist. You decide what you prefer. There is no right or wrong answer.

All three images below were taken within seconds of each other. All we did was spin the model around to show how the direction we shot at in relation to the sun really had the ability to totally change the look and feel of the image. Just make sure that when you are shooting, you are concentrating on the light and how it’s making your model look. Are you using the available light to the best of your ability? Are you even thinking about it? As photographers, light is our friend. Learn to use it, learn to love it, and it will love you too :).

Big hugs!!!
PS Big thanks to the model, my sister, Lizzie!

You two are too cute! Ok, I have a question. I prefer the last shot – did you have to amend your settings in camera compared to the first two shots, or did you need to do any work afterwards to it? Or is that simply straight out of the camera?
    Thanks Alex xo

Loved this video… great explanation for ways to look at light. People often forget that just taking a walk around what you’re photographing will help you find the light you want. I tend to prefer the last shot but lately I’ve been falling in love with direct sunlight… like in that middle shot. I love that her face is positioned well enough that there aren’t any awful shadows on it.

    Ahhh, sisters! can’t live without them… :D
