A behind the scenes look into how I take my self portraits – Chatty Tuesdays with Alex Beadon

How I made this Self Portrait:

Hi friend,

This is the first time I’ve ever done a video showing a behind the scenes look into how I shoot my self portraits. I have done other posts before on self portraiture, you can find those below:

One Self Portrait Every Day for Thirty Days: Results.

A before & after self portrait.

Seven steps to creating beautiful self portraits.

I really hope this helps, my friend! And I hope it inspires you to get out there and take some self portraits of your own!

Big hugs

Love the video Alex, and thanks for sharing.

I loved your method for focusing the shots, as for myself i use a pole with a tennis ball on the end of it or a suitable fruit. -) However I am in no way brave enough or good looking enough to share any of my self portraits.

    cheers

are you shooting video of yourself then versus taking shots….and then grabbing the pics out of the video? Or did you add the video of you posing but you were taking pictures of yourself not video? Also…..on the focusing issue…Im not sure..Ill have to try it myself to see but what about puting your focus mode to AI Servo so that it tracks you and focus each picture right before the shutter goes off instead of one shot where it stays focused on the single point the whole time? I want to get into some Flicker projects such as the self-portraits and whatnot so Ill have to trey this too but let me know if you do and it works. (I use a Canon 7D0

Alex, what kind of remote do you use for your camera?

  • http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com Alex Beadon

Hey Janelle, The remote I use is a Canon rc1. :)

Hey Ashley, The photos are taken separately from the video. They aren’t just screen shots of the video itself haha – although it wouldn’t be such a horrible idea ;). The focusing issue is still not perfect, but where there’s a will there’s a way. I’m convinced I’ll figure out an easier way one day, which will involve lots less guess work and take me much less time! :) Good luck on your flickr projects! Let me know how it goes!

Jonathan! That is such a fantastic idea to use a pole with a tennis ball at the end of it! So smart. Yeah the focusing is definitely something I need to work on as it still too “trial and error” haha. I’m thinking of buying a music stand or something to always put in my place – the problem is finding something tall enough! Haha.

THANK YOU for making this video. It’s great. I’ll be looking for a remote shutter now for my camera so that I can experiment with self-portraits.
