Why everyone should blog.

It used to be almost impossible to get published. It was the select and lucky few who ever had the chance of being at the right place at the right time with the approval of the right people who had the privilege of being published, the privilege of being heard. It was impossible for normal people like you and me to be heard by the masses without lots of money and the right connections. It was impossible.

And here I am today, typing out a blog post which I can publish with the touch of a button. The touch of a button. I don’t think many people understand how much power that gives us. At a time where anyone with access to the internet has the ability to be heard, publishing your work today is easier than it ever has been in the history of all time – because it is in our hands.

Which brings me to the topic of today’s post … the fact that I believe that each and every single person should have a blog.

Why? Because we all have something to say. We all have a unique perspective and vision of life. We all have things to share. And we all deserve to be heard. We owe it to our ancestors ,who would have loved this opportunity, to take this opportunity.

I’ve met a lot of passionate people in my life. And whenever I tell them that they should start a blog they roll their eyes. It’s like there’s this stereotypical view of what a blog should be, and they have no interest in it whatsoever. I think what people don’t realise is that a blog can be anything you want it to be. Blogs can be written by anyone about anything.

After telling them this, they respond with a variety of answers that all sound something like this: “What would I write about?” “I have nothing to share.” ”I’m not a good writer”  ”I’m boring.” Blah blah blah. Excuses, excuses.

I’ll say it again. Blogs can be written by anyone about anything.

And I honestly believe that everyone has something to say. Everyone has a voice, everyone has a reason to be heard.

So … going back to you. And your blog. What are you going to blog about?  It’s pretty much a question that scares everyone to death and prevents them from ever even starting their blog…
But the answer is simple. Blog about anything you want.

  1. Start a blog revolving around you and your passion or hobby.
    - It could be photography, cooking, history, design, beauty, fashion… ANYTHING.
    - I don’t care if you’re passionate about knitting sweaters for your pet frog .. if it’s awesome enough to be your hobby .. then it’s an awesome enough thing to start blogging about.
  2. Start a lifestyle blog – one that’s about your life and the cool things you find from day to day. Or your thoughts. Or an online diary. Or what you ate that day. Or your personal opinion on what’s going on in the world. Or what you learned that day.
With just a few clicks of a button you have the opportunity to be heard. It’s almost magical :).

Don’t know where to start?

Try WordPress. Tumblr. Blogger. All free. All easy. Start now and never look back. Try to blog every other day, if possible, and see where it takes you.

If you have a blog, leave the link below – I would love to check it out! And if you’ve decided to start a blog after reading this, and still need some help in any way whatsoever – send me an email! I’d love to hear from you!

Big hugs!

wow this hit me hard! Seriously, you’re like a guru.

I agree completely; I’ve been trying to get my mom to start one. I think she’d really enjoy it. And imagine what historians will make of today’s blogs in 100 years or so… Assuming they survive that long.

I’ve been blogging for years and absolutely love it. Some days are better than others, of course but over all, I imagine I’ll be blogging until I die. I mostly blog where my name links to but I also blog on tumblr and posterous. In different ways. Love sharing my love and life with the world. Love reading your blog and connecting with you through it. Pretty damn awesome.

This is a great post Alex, and I totally agree – I started wedding blogging because I love everything about weddings, to begin with I thought people would think it was a little weird as I am neither married or engaged but since I started I have never looked back and I have met some fabulous people online.

I wholeheartedly recommend blogging about hobbies / passions / life to anyone x

Blogging is so amazing and I totally agree with you that more people should enter into the blogging world. There’s a lot we can learn from people’s lives, perspectives, and words. :)Sharing life with other people is pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing YOUR talent and life with all of us!

I started a blog to put stuff that feeds me and my art. I must admit, after I started it, I stop writing so much because I figure, I don’t have an angle of what to say or that what I’m doing, really doesn’t matter.

I love the ideas you put forth here. You have a good point. This blog can be my little part of the universe that is all mine. The rest really, doesn’t matter too much, I suppose.

    Thank you.

hey love this post … i had a similar view about blogging until I moved to Dubai with my fiance and we decided to start a blog about our adventures in the middle east … (after a friend suggested it) … i initially thought my fiance would do most of the writing and i would supply the photos (photography is more my thing than writing) … but as its turned out i write more of the content than he does and i’ve grown to really enjoy blogging about our lives … as mundane as it is for some people to read about its a great way for us to keep in touch with our family and friends and let everyone know what were up to … im even planning on starting one up for my photography soon …

    our travel blog … http://www.perryandmina.wordpress.com

thanks for the inspiration … love your work and your blog is great too.

    :)

    Hi Mina!

Thanks so much for sharing your blog with me! I have added it to my google reader and hope to follow along with all of your traveling journeys :). I think the thing with blogging is that you really have to enjoy doing it to feel its benefits, you know? The beauty is when you start blogging and learn to really love it and it becomes a part of your life and a way to document. It sounds like this is what blogging has done for you! Does it sometimes feel strange for you being so open on the web? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. I’m thinking of starting up my own “personal” blog which would be much less to do with photography and much more to do with me and life in general, but struggling with the thought of it all being so “open”, although that’s also the intriguing beauty about it. I mean, really, what do I have to hide? Do you every worry for your privacy when blogging?

Big hugs and thanks for your comment!
    xoxo

Great post Alex – as you say, blogging’s a really great way to get your message out there, and it doesn’t have to be business related! AS it is, mine is … wedding and portrait photography (with a few other things thrown in for good measure from time to time! … http://www.ianh.co.uk/blog

    Cheers, Ian.

What a wonderful blog post! I couldn’t agree more! I dream of having thousands of followers, but really, I just love the ideas of getting my thoughts/opinions out there and getting a conversation going about the things that I’m passionate about. There’s no better reward then meeting new people who share the same interests as you yet live hundreds even thousands of miles away. =)

  • http://raebyday.blogspot.com/ Rachael

I totally agree. I blog about creative projects and more recently my wedding and all the planning that went into it. I may not have a lot of readers but its a great way to document things that have happened in my life. :)

You know Alex, every time you post a comment on facebook, or share a link, I can tell what kind of person you are. You are kind. You project love, and support and encourage others. Thank you for sharing so much of your goodness with the world.

I love blogging. I’ve tried to delete my blog several times because sometimes I feel like I’m not good enough or it is taking so much time. But I always go back and undelete it because bringing a post together and editing pictures brings me so much joy. Thanks for the encouragement! I feel like someone believes in me!

Hi Alex! I’ve just recently started getting into blogging for my business. It’s kind of discouraging sometimes, though, because I feel like it’s not reaching anyone. Do you have any suggestions on how to spread the word about your blog, and maybe connect with other bloggers? Particularly other photographers, or people involved in creative industries?

Great post Alex as usual. Your blog is an inspiration. I have a blog (http://www.millycolley.com/blog) but I don’t think I’m getting the full benefits as I’m only posting sporadically. It’s difficult to keep putting things up on it when it feels like no one reads it. Did you find this at first with your blog? How would you suggest getting more readers?

  • http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com Alex Beadon

    Hey Ian!

Thanks so much for sharing your blog :) I’m off to check it out!

    xoxo

  • http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com Alex Beadon

    Chelsea,

Thanks so much for your comment! The best thing about a blog is that your posts never disappear (unless you delete them, of course haha!). Great posts live on and on (like this one, which I wrote ages ago!). I think everyone would love thousands of followers, it’s a beautiful ego boost .. but I think the most rewarding thing is exactly what you: said getting a really interesting conversation going, being able to inspire someone with your words or photos, and of course getting the chance to meet inspirational people through a shared passion. I have met so many beautiful people thanks to my blog and web presence. Blogging is something I have never regretted, and something I hope I never stop doing. Fingers crossed ;)

    BIG HUGS!
    XOXO

  • http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com Alex Beadon

Rachael – it’s the BEST WAY to document the happenings of your life! I LOVE going through old posts, it reminds me of all the feelings I had, where I’ve been, and why I do what I do. So rewarding. Keep blogging, girl! xoxo

  • http://www.alexbeadonphotography.com Alex Beadon

    Becca!

Your comment was so sweet, thank you for all your kind words – they really made my day! Thank you!

That feeling of “not good enough”? Totally normal and something that everyone feels, my friend! We’ve got to stop listening to that little voice of fear and resistance! Hey, a great book for you to read (if you haven’t already) would be “The War of Art”! It is so inspiring for artists of all kinds, and really tackles this issue of feeling “not good enough” etc..

And the feeling of “it’s taking up too much time”? My sister told me a great quote yesterday that applies well here: “there is a huge difference between an excuse and an emergency”. For some reason that quote has really inspired me to put all my excuses aside and remember that if I really want to do something ( like blogging ) it’s up to me to make it happen! :) Hopefully it inspires you, too!

Glad to hear that you always go back and undelete the blog, you’re right – putting together a post feels so good and therapeutic almost, doesn’t it? LOVE IT!

Rock on, Becca! You’ve got this. Can’t wait to check out your blog!
    BIG HUGS

This is a great question, and you are the second person in this comments section to ask me about this! I think it deserves it’s own post, though, so keep an eye out for an upcoming blog post on the topic! Thank you for the inspiration!

I would love to see a frog in a sweater, so if anyone blogs about that, I think we all want to see it! ;) I would echo many of the comments above. But forums like these really help encourage and motivate each other! x

Thanks Alex. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the post on this topic. And thanks for choosing to do a dedicated post on the topic.

Hope you are well and enjoying life in London :)
