Covent Garden Street Portraits

“As an artist I dread the day that I’m stuck in my comfort zone. I think it’s so important to always push boundaries, throw yourself out of your comfort zone in any way that you possibly can. I believe that you grow tremendously when you’re doing things that scare you and excite you all at the same time. Everything is a learning experience, and although you can’t always see it at the time, failure helps you on your journey to success – so it’s a win-win situation :).”

If you follow my blog you’ll come to learn that I talk a lot about the importance of living outside of your comfort zone, living your life as an adventure. But how often do I actually do it? Throwing myself out of my comfort zone is something I’ve been focusing on a lot lately, with my shoot swap with Dominique, an organised lunch for photographers, and now this!

Sachin is an awesome photographer who I actually found thanks to Jasmine Star‘s creative live workshop. I actually thought he was based in Canada, but turns out he’s in London for the time being. We got talking on Twitter and somehow ended up with a decision to meet up and do something a little bit different – street portraits.

The idea is to pick a spot, and wait for people to pass by so that we can stop them and ask them if it would be alright for us to take their photo. It was awesome. Here are some of my favorites:

(All shot with my Canon 5d Mark ii and my 50mm 1.4)

I was surprised that most people were more than willing to have their portraits taken, and that some of them even wanted to stop and have a chat. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m so happy I finally did it! This was an incredible experience, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be my new photographic addiction. I have to say a huge thank you to Sachin who was totally up for the challenge! He’s a great guy – super friendly and fun to be around, so he made the morning a great one.

Here are a few behind the scenes:

Sachin’s very own street portrait ;) Just testing the light here :)

Sachin asking the old man for the first time if we could take his photo and getting turned down. I later approached him on accident for a second time and somehow he managed to get him to agree :)

And last but not least, here’s Sachin doing his thing.

Hope you all have a beautiful day :)

Fantastic shots from the morning. Something I’ve always wanted to do – this may have just given me the little push. Now. Where to go…

LOVE this!!! I’ve always wanted to do this around Lubbock but have been too nervous and shy to do it. :D Don’t know why but I absolutely love seeing portraits of people, even though I don’t know them one bit. :)

I love this post. The portraits are amazing. Each one makes me wonder what sort of life these people are having or have had up to the point of being shot.
This kind of shoot is way out of my comfort zone but something I think that I should try.
Do you get asked where they can see or get a copy of the photos?

Well done Alex, these are great.

It takes a lot of courage to go up to people and get them to show themselves in the light of your lens. I’m sure now you’ve got this session under your belt it will be that much easier next time.

Other photographers have spoken of similar challenges being set for them, back in the film days. One roll of 24 and you have to shoot 24 portraits…tape up the back of your camera too and you can have the same experience in the digital days!

Great job Alex! Thanks for the behind the scenes shots and the portrait too ;) I dont even remember you taking the portrait!! Ha!

I truly had an awesome morning doing this.. It was a pleasure meeting you and thank you for the great idea! I’d been hoping to do it for a while and finally got to do it…

We were buzzing after just shots of 5 people!! ha! Who knew we would get 34 in just over an hour ;)

Keep up the great work.. and keep pushing boundaries and staying out of your comfort zone

    I adore these portraits.
Great comparison to the colour images from Sachin. This is such a great idea and such a fantastic portrait of London as well.
You have inspired me to jump out of my comfort zone.

Absolutely gorgeous! How funny that you and Sachin struck up a friendship thanks to Jasmine Star. Sometimes this industry can drive you nuts, but when I see things like this it warms my heart and reminds me why I love photography so much.

Always wanted to do something like this, but always been too scared! Well done Alex & Sachin!

When I saw this project I was blown away by how in its simplicity it has captured the essence of what photography is all about: documenting the human experience. I hope it inspires others to take on this same project in other cities. I know I want to give it a try :)

These are so fabulous… I LOVE the portraits, they hold so much personality. I’ve always wanted to do this, but am afraid I would find it too awkward. Maybe doing it with someone else is the key =P

What a fantastic idea! I love all of the portraits and they all draw you in in different ways. Love the one of the girl smoking, full of attitude!

Oh I’d love to do this but i’m not brave enough, but as you say it’s because in not in my comfort zone. You’ve inspired me to move it up my todo list :-)

    That’s really cool!!

Such an amazing project! Must tell you that I did this today with another photographer (who I think already commented on this post – Nicole) in Philadelphia. It was tough to get the courage to ask people but it was such an awesome feeling to be doing it! I’ll be posting soon! The B&W really adds to the feeling in the images.

Cool idea. I did some st portraits in Northampton but get a ton of rejection. It seems easier in London [anywhere with a bit more culture]. Nice B&W processing too
